Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess skin, fat, and muscle. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on patient needs. This procedure can help correct sagging skin, eliminate under-eye bags, and tighten the eyelid area to eliminate crow’s feet, resulting in a more refreshed, youthful look and boosting self-confidence. Here’s a guide on what to expect.

There are two main types of blepharoplasty:

  • Upper Blepharoplasty: Focuses on removing excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids. This is especially beneficial for those whose eyelids have drooped and obstructed their vision.
  • Lower Blepharoplasty: Targets the lower eyelids to reduce puffiness and under-eye bags. This part of the surgery removes or redistributes fat and tightens the skin for a smoother, more youthful contour.

Who is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty can benefit a wide range of individuals, but it’s especially effective for those who are experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Droopy or sagging upper eyelids: Excess skin on the upper eyelids can impair vision, and blepharoplasty can correct this issue.
  • Under-eye bags: Puffiness or fat bulging under the eyes can make you look tired or older than you are. Lower blepharoplasty can help eliminate these bags.
  • Wrinkles or fine lines around the eyes: Blepharoplasty can improve the appearance of crow’s feet and other skin imperfections by tightening the skin.
  • Overall tired or aged appearance: If you’re looking for a more rejuvenated look, eyelid surgery can help you look more refreshed and alert.

Good candidates should be in overall good health, have realistic expectations about the procedure, and not have any serious eye conditions such as glaucoma or dry eye.

The Benefits of Blepharoplasty

The benefits of eyelid surgery extend far beyond just cosmetic enhancements. Here are some of the most notable advantages:

  • Youthful Appearance: By removing sagging skin and puffiness, blepharoplasty gives a younger, brighter, and more vibrant look to the eyes.
  • Improved Vision: For those with drooping eyelids, blepharoplasty can restore the vision by lifting the upper eyelids and removing excess skin.
  • Enhanced Confidence: A more youthful and refreshed appearance can help boost self-esteem and confidence.
  • Long-Lasting Results: While the aging process continues, the results of blepharoplasty can last for many years, making it a durable solution for those looking to maintain a youthful look.

What is an Oculoplastic Surgeon?

Oculoplastic surgeons perform blepharoplasty procedures. While general plastic surgeons offer an array of treatments for the entire body, our oculoplastic surgeons strictly perform procedures around the eye and associated structures, making them experts in their field. The oculoplastic surgeons at Minnesota Eye Consultants have completed an additional 2-year fellowship training following their ophthalmology residency through the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS).

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

Step 1: The Consultation

Before your procedure, you’ll meet with your surgeon to discuss your goals, medical history, and expectations. They’ll examine your eyelids and explain the procedure, risks, and costs. Ask all your questions!

Step 2: Preparing for Surgery

Stop certain medications, avoid smoking, and arrange for a ride home the day of your surgery. Plan ahead and set up a recovery area with a comfortable area to rest, ice packs, eye drops, and entertainment.

Step 3: The Procedure

A blepharoplasty is an outpatient surgery, typically lasting between 1–2 hours depending on the complexity of your procedure. For upper blepharoplasty, the surgeon typically makes incisions along the natural crease of the eyelid, making them less noticeable. For lower blepharoplasty, incisions may be made just below the lower lash line or inside the eyelid. Once the incisions are made, the surgeon will remove or reposition excess skin, muscle, and fat as needed. The incisions are closed with tiny sutures, and the procedure is complete. You’ll go home the same day.

Step 4: Recovery

Expect some swelling and bruising. Use cold compresses to help reduce swelling, keep your head elevated, and avoid rubbing your eyes. You may be prescribed pain medication to manage any discomfort. Rest is important during the initial recovery period. Avoid strenuous activities and give your eyes time to heal. Depending on the type of sutures used, they may be removed within 5-7 days after surgery.

You will need to visit your surgeon for follow-up visits to monitor healing and ensure that there are no complications. Most patients feel better in about a week, with full results in a few months.
