Minnesota Eye Consultants is comprised of some of the most recognized leaders in ophthalmology today. Each surgeon is dedicated to providing superior patient care while continuing to conduct research and ensure we’re offering our patients the best technology and treatment options available. Our mission is to preserve, restore and enhance vision through research, teaching, and providing the highest quality medical and surgical care to patients.
Patients with cataracts often note that their vision is blurry, colors appear dull, and they struggle with driving at night due to the troubling glare and halos around headlights. If this sounds familiar, you may be experiencing cataracts yourself.
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s naturally clear lens. The lens typically becomes cloudy and has a bit of a yellowish hue to it. When the natural lens experiences this clouding effect, vision quality is diminished. Many people describe this sensation as looking through a foggy car window or a piece of wax paper. Cataracts can be burdensome especially to people who have had clear vision most of their life.
The lens in your eye is responsible for focusing light rays on the retina, which is the part of the eye that senses light and transmits these images to the brain. When the natural lens becomes cloudy, light rays cannot possibly pass through. Vision becomes blurry at this point and as the cataract develops, it becomes increasingly difficult to see. Developing cataracts is part of the normal aging process. It has been stated by many eye doctors that if you live long enough, you will develop cataracts.
Every patient will have a unique set of needs and desires surrounding their vision following the surgery, and we’re happy to offer an array of options to help each individual reach their visual goal. Some patients will choose the standard monofocal lens for their procedure, while others will opt into a Premium Vision Package to further enhance their vision after surgery. We have the ability to improve vision through Specialty Lens implants, surgical techniques, and post-cataract procedures.
If you have astigmatism and have been diagnosed with cataracts, a Toric Lens may be the best option for you. When you have astigmatism, the light is focused unevenly due to the shape of the cornea: the surface of the eye is oval shaped, like a football, rather than round like a baseball. This causes images to look shadowed or blurry. With the technology of Toric IOLs, cataracts, and astigmatism can be corrected all in one surgery.
The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the most accurate option for adjusting the prescription after cataract surgery. It's the first lens that allows fine-tuning to correct vision at various distances.
LALs provide patients with the choice of correcting nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or both, by optimizing one eye for each. This highly customizable lens enables patients to try out different focal point corrections before settling on a final choice.
The TECNIS Multifocal Lens offers qualified patients the opportunity to have high-quality vision at any distance and in any light condition. The advanced TECNIS Multifocal is an implantable lens that restores vision after cataract surgery and aims to correct presbyopia (the need for reading glasses).
An Accommodative Lens offers a similar increased range of vision following cataract surgery, by replicating the functionality of the natural lens. The unique Accommodative Lens accomplishes this with tiny hinges that allow the eye muscle to flex the lens back and forth for various depths of clarity.
The first in a new category of IOLs, the TECNIS Symfony lens offers the opportunity for a full range of continuous, high-quality vision following cataract surgery, while also mitigating the effects of presbyopia by helping people focus on near objects. This lens is considered an Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOL, as there is a continuum of vision from the distance to the near focal point.
Basic Cataract Surgery (monofocal lenses) that allow you to see well at one distance are typically covered by insurance, while premium lenses are paid for out-of-pocket. Financing is available for these upgraded lens packages. Request an appointment today to learn more about pricing!
